Violating the Michigan Face Covering Rule

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive order 2020-147 on July 10, 2020, requiring everyone in Michigan to wear a face mask every time they are inside an indoor public space and within a crowded outdoor area. If a person refuses to wear a face covering inside a business, then staff are required to refuse entry.

If you violate the new face mask rule, you will be charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a fine of up to $500. Violating this rule will not result in jail time.

However, there are some exceptions to the rule. Children younger than five (5) years old, individuals who cannot medically tolerate a mask, and those who are eating/drinking inside a restaurant are exempt from wearing a mask inside a Michigan business. Furthermore, you are allowed to remove your mask while participating in a religious act in a place of worship.

The governor’s office says the executive order was in response to the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the state. Other states, such as Nevada, Washington, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Main have enacted similar orders.
